Calling all adventurists

ad·ventur·ist - Involvement in risky enterprises without regard to proper procedures and possible consequences, especially the reckless participation in exploits or affairs of regions.

We rather admire theadventurists.com However we embrace being amateurs and extraordinary gentlemen (and quite possibly women too) for whom challenge is not tourism but personal discovery followed by a cup of Earl Grey.

In that spirit I would like to propose that collectively we all come up with a challenge and better of us will be the person who performs the best across all the challenges. In order for a challenge to be valid it must not be boring, but should be difficult and preferably legal. It must be accepted by at least three people and completed by at least one.

Please email me your challenges to timhjrogers@googlemail.com and I will create a web-page to post these for everyone to see any anyone to participate. If you have a specific date or venue you need to explain this in your challenge.

Please be clear, this is not a club or a business. If you are mad enough to come up with an idea and daft enough to do it you do so at your own risk. See http://www.darwinawards.com/

As a starter perhaps think about Tough Guy (cross-country run + assault course = mud, sweat and beers) on 29 January 2012

TRIATHLON AND WINTER TRAINING

TRIATHLON AND WINTER TRAINING

There is a Jersey Triathlon FaceBook page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/141913405842582/?ref=ts

Below are some notes which might help you get started.

SWIM

Winter is a great time to start triathlon training because it is ‘back to basics’ time. There is coached swimming on Monday evenings at AquaSplash at 8pm (I think) and many swim at 6:30 am on Wed, Thurs and Fri, although it is a while since I was last in the pool. I know there are a bunch who also swim at 12noon. The coached swimming is excellent since it is about technique not speed, and the coach is really patient and very good.

BIKE

I run spinning classes at BodyRox on Tues 7:30am and Wed 5:45pm. There are membership and pay-as-you-go options. I also run a 7pm class on Thursdays just for Triathletes. This is a great way to get fit away from the wind, rain, darkness and traffic. There are also club rides on Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30am from the Gunsite café. The Velo Cycling Club also have a club ride from the Steam Clock at 9am on Sat and Sun – if you think 8:30am is a bit too early.

RUN

The Spartans run on Tuesdays from West Park at 6pm. These are good and fun sessions. I might also start doing additional run sessions, but not really decided yet. There is FaceBook page called “Run Jersey” and a couple of other web-based running groups/clubs.

See http://www.facebook.com/pages/Run-Jersey/209278752443250

GENERAL ADVICE

I 'retired' from Triathlon in 2006 after the Commonwealths but still swim, bike, run as well as rowing etc., although not competitively anymore!

I also have a website http://www.timhjrogers.com/pt/triathlon.html
This contains advice on swim, bike and run.

Planning Winter Training Programme 2011 to 2012

WEIGHTS AT ROWING CLUB
Soon time to start winter training with the Rowing Club: 6am on Mon, Wed and Fridays. I will start designing a training plan but will probably be similar to last year. This means warm-up, then 2minutes at each exercise station. We'll have between 7 to 10 stations and you work and rotate for the hour. Then warm-down.

I am also keen to do some Concept2 trials so that people are fit for Jersey v Guernsey in February and then the UK and European Indoor Rowing Competition in March.

SPINNING AT BODYROX
As well as Mon 7am and Wed 6pm Spinn will start sessions for Triathlon Club as follows.

Triathlon tomorrow - Predicted time 2:33

Getting ready for Triathlon tomorrow involves dusting down kit not used in 5 years (since 2006!)

Set-up Swim

Just realised I don't fit in my wetsuit!! Have been wondering 'round the house wearing it to try and make it stretch. Might be lucky enough to get into it tomorrow but not sure I will be able to breath. Inhaling is a real challenge against the tight rubber of the suit.

I also anticipate a fun time trying to peel it off at the end of the swim. However I think I'd still be better with a wetsuit rather than without since I have not done anything like this for 5 years I suspect I will benefit from the buoyancy (which will make-up for poor technique) and also allow me to float and rest if I get tired.

Estimated time for swim 30minutes

Set-up Bike

Quick pump of tyres, test of brakes and a ride up and down the road trying to get my feet in and out of the shoes for a fast start and finish to the bike section. I suspect I may be OK at this, but may be disappointed to make a slick professional start and then only cycle along at 20mph!

Set-up Speedo

The I.S.O. tire size consists of a tire width and a bead seat diameter. Both of these numbers are in millimeters. For example, a 28-622 (700 x 28C) tire has a nominal width of 28mm on a rim with a bead seat diameter of 622 mm

To get an approximate diameter (in mm) add the bead seat diameter to twice the tire width (since the tire comes into the diameter twice: 622 + (28 X 2) = 678. Multiply this by pi (3.142) to get the circumference in mm = 2130.

I think my calcs are tyre = 23-622
622 + (23 x 2) = 668 x 3.142 (pi) = 2100 as good as damn it

I'm not entirely sure I trust this so might strap the Garmin to the bike too. Knowing my speed should motivate me to work harder/faster…never enough speed and likely to be far behind all my rivals so the clocks are the only inductors of how well I am doing!

My legs are very tired having completed the Etape du Tour, 48 Mile Ultra Marathon, a series of rowing endurance races and more recently started marathon training and canoeing for the Thames River Challenge. However despite being very, very tired. I am reasonably fit.

Estimated time for bike 75minutes

Set-up Run

Thinking of using the old shoes from 2006. They have not done much milage and have elastic laces. No point in losing time fiddling around with lace-up marathon shoes. I have lots of stamina in the legs due to events listed above, but I have no speed. I can trot out 10min/mile pace for 50 miles, and don't expect to be super fast tomorrow.

Estimated time for run 6 x 8/min miles = 48minutes

TOTAL ESTIMATED TIME 2HOURS 33 MINS

Looking at the above its clear why I managed the Etape du Tour (11 Jul) OK. There are lots of weeks at 120 miles+ so I'd done the mileage OK.

Thoughts and Lessons from 48mi UltraMarathon 6 Aug 2011

Thoughts and Lessons from 48mi UltraMarathon 6 Aug 2011

Buying new shoes 1 week before the event was a great idea. I also bought new grey 1000 mile sock and my feet felt great! Unfortunately so many people told me this was a bad thing to try, that I packed my old shoes in the half-way bag to switch into. Within a mile I knew I preferred the comfort and support of the shoes I'd taken off over the old shoes that now had to carry me 24miles.

Fuel strategy was good. Ran with 2 x 50m bottles of lucozade and refilled them at each 10mi check point. 1 Litre per 10mi was OK, but was running a bit low on the leg from Gronez to St Brelade.

Having 3 food bars before half-way bag and 3 after was great.

Started sensible: 1hour 40min to St Caths, and Marathon in 5 hours. I knew that I did not have the training to go far or fast, so I just held a pace…although toward the end it became a real challenge to keen below 12min mile pace!

Disappointed not to go sub-9 hours, but then to do a race like this you should be running 60miles per week. I've really only been doing long Sundays the weekdays have been rowing or cycling. On that basis I should be pleased with 9hours 11mins

Next time (If I am dumb enough to do this again) running 40-50miles per week would at least put some strength, stamina and lateral balance in my knees. My average has been about 25miles per week. My body was OK, but my legs were trashed: unable to walk/run downhill. I was OK on the flats.

I think I could get nearer the gold-standard (sub-8 hours) but it would mean giving up all the other fun sports and challenges that I do. If I had a choice of a gold medal or a silver and also doing the Tour de France, Rowing to France, Thames Challenge and Pierre Bigault bike race, I think my preference would be to give up the gold and enjoy all those other experiences…so I am not too disappointed to be thrashed by a lot of people far better than me.

Next challenges: Monday doing a spinning class! Tuesday doing a rowing race! But the big one will be the Thames River Challenge, in September.

Cosgrove's Evil 8

Cosgrove's Evil 8

"Complexes elevate metabolism beyond anything you've ever experienced before," says Alwyn Cosgrove.

Sounds good to us, but how much weight do you use? "Just remember," says Cosgrove, "it's a metabolic stimulus, not a strength or hypertrophy stimulus, so be conservative. MMA pro David Loiseau uses only 85-95 pounds when doing the complexes I prescribe for him."

That said, don't go too light, either. A good "Cosgrove rule of thumb" is that if you're not questioning why in the hell you're doing these exercises, or convincing yourself that two circuits is enough, you're not going heavy enough.

The basic rule is to use the heaviest weight you can on the weakest movement in the complex. For example, if the complex contains an overhead press and a back squat, you'd use the weight you can handle on the overhead press, not the squat. Otherwise you'd get crushed, and girls would laugh.

But honestly, loading doesn't matter much. If you're de-conditioned or you fall into that dreaded category of "big 'n strong but outta shape," then you'll be tortured with a naked Olympic bar... and maybe even a broomstick. You'll figure out loading anyway during your first complex workout, so don't think about it so damn much and just go do it.

Crazy idea, I know.

Here's one of the most effective Cosgrovian complexes:

Deadlift

Romanian Deadlift

Bentover Row

Power Clean

Front Squat

Push Press

Back Squat

Good Morning

On round one, perform 6 reps of each exercise, moving from one exercise to the next, never letting go of the bar, never resting. Remember, you'll finish all six reps of each exercise before moving to the next one.

Rest 90 seconds after the first circuit, then perform 5 reps of each in the next circuit; rest 90 seconds, 4 reps of each; rest 90 seconds, 3 reps of each; rest 90 seconds, 2 reps of each; rest 90 seconds, and then do 1 rep of each.

Cosgrove says that the entire workout should take about 12 minutes, not counting the time you spend sobbing like a little girl in a purdy pink dress.

Advice on Triathlon

I 'retired' from Triathlon in 2006 after the Commonwealths but still swim, bike, run as well as rowing etc. I am always happy to offer advice and support. Let me know any specific questions or needs and I will share the answer via the blog so that other people can benefit and learn. If you have a private query you can email me.

See my blog at http://swimbikerunparty.blogspot.com

I also have a website http://www.timhjrogers.com/pt/triathlon.html
This contains advice on swim, bike and run…

Swim http://www.timhjrogers.com/pt/swim.html
Some suggested sessions and video etc

Bike http://www.timhjrogers.com/pt/bike.html
Some Q&A and some 'How To' Guides at the bottom of the page

Run http://www.timhjrogers.com/pt/run.html
Some notes about running

To be honest the website stuff is a little tired/old. I hope that blogging will allow me to keep stuff fresh and interesting, and maybe suggest new and interesting sports for people like me, who feel one sport is just not enough?!

Next Great Challenge - London's Great River Race

Next Great Challenge - London's Great River Race

Once I've competed the Etape du Tour on 11 July (I am Numéro de dossier : 107496) and the Ultra Marathon 6th August I'll need something else to focus on, so I'm up for training for the London's Great River Race

See Etape du Tour at http://www.letapedutour.com/EDT1/2011/ETDT/presentation/us/carte_parcours.htm See also http://www.letapedutour.com/EDT2/2011/ETDT/presentation/us/index.htm

See Ultra Marathon at http://www.roundtherock.co.uk/

See London's Great River Race at http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/

It should be a great challenge with the other people taking part in my boat being the River Quest Crew from the Yukon - they were a fantastic team and I am very lucky to be offered a place in the boat.

I will need to switch from stamina to strength training in July/August. Once I complete the Etape du Tour I will drop 130miles a week of cycling in favour of rowing & weights. Then when I've completed the Ultra Marathon I will focus entirely on paddling the boat.

It is going to be a great year for challenges!

Secrets to riding 100miles (166km) and feeling good!

Managed my first local 100mile (166km) bike today. I've done big milage before, when training for Ironman (3.8k swim, 112mi bike and 26mi marathon). However I've never actually rode 100 miles in Jersey before. I've always stopped at 70miles and then done a run!

I am pleased with my achievement, but realise that three things were significant in my success.

First that I've been building up with regular Saturdays doing 60, then 70, 80 and last week 95 miles. This helps both with the fitness and the mental attitude required for 6 hours riding!

Second is the fact that I started at 6am and did a lot of miles with friends, before then joining the cycle club at 9am to do a lot of miles with different friends. Then after a fuel stop at the Watersplash (approx 80miles done) I then entered stage three. Breaking the rides into 3 stages helped, and having small targets and good friends makes the whole thing easier.

Third is the fact that I'd mentally committed to doing 100miles last week and came prepared. I took 2 bananas, lots of water and 2 energy bars. This kept my energy up for the ride, and kept my spirits up when I got to eat tasty stuff. The previous week I did less mileage, but with no food and I really suffered. Riding on empty is no recommended for the mind or the body. Having got home, showered and changed I zipped down to Big Maggy's (advertisement here) to buy some more fuel: Energy drinks for riding and Recovery drinks for after.

I am looking forward to racing in France and I am sure the above 3 factors will play a great part on the pleasure (and hopefully success) of my campaign. I will let you know how I get on with the Energy drinks for riding and Recovery drinks for after - you are what you eat, and your performance is significantly effected my your choice of fuel!

A fun bike event in France on Saturday 25th June

Anyone interested in a fun bike event in France on Saturday 25th June

Le Pierre Le Bigaut Cycling race held every year in Callac is to be on Saturday 25th June 2011.  Anyone can enter! Over 6,000 people race every year including children and pensioners!

See http://www.kernormand.com/events/la-pierre-le-bigaut.html
Who is Pierre? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Le_Bigault

The venue is 1.5 hours of 'relaxed driving' from St Malo. I reckon we could cycle there easily enough with a small rucsac and a credit card to look after ourselves for the weekend?

Email me at timhjrogers@googlemail.com if you are interested.

Cycling: Here come the girls!

Hopefully lots of ladies saw the excellent article in the Jersey Evening Post (Page 81 Fri 27 May 2011) about ladies cycling. There has never been a better time for women to get into cycling, there is a huge amount of support and sponsorship, great get-fit opportunities and a ticket to better health, and greater wealth by leaving the car at home!

If you want to find out more contact jemima.leach@vistra.com

In the meantime, don't forget that you can make a start right away with spinning. Tim Rogers is doing indoor cycling at BodyRox on Monday 7am (before work) and Wednesday 6pm (after work). This is a great and safe environment to get fit at your own pace, and in great company with experienced advice.

You'll find BodyBox at Seaton Place, St Helier (the old church now converted into a gym)

Training Plan for Bank Hol Weekend 27 May 2011

Training Plan for Bank Hol Weekend 27 May 2011

Weekend:
Fri 6pm Bike Race (Jubilee Climb),
Sat 7.30am Bike Race then 50mi ride,
Sun 8am 20mi run then 12pm Rubis Town TT,
Mon 7.30am Bike Race (Watersplash) and then 20mi run??
Will either do 20mi run on Sun or Mon (not both!) – will decide later

[Revised 10pm on Fri -rubbish ride tonight, legs too tired to race on top form. spend £5 to get a time of 5:03. i think the winning time was 4:50 ish. I might be tempted to to a long steady since a TT seems a waste of time/money when my aim is the Etape in 15 days!]

Happy for anyone to join me for any of the above, especially the runs, which will probably be on the cliff paths.

5 Challenge Adventure Team Event

A couple of years ago John Fox and I ran the 5 Challenge Adventure Team Event.

The Challenge comprised physical and mental tasks in a team-building environment where everyone had to do their bit. 17 teams of 5 people took part and had a great time. Each of the challenges had to be complete in a time limit, with points awarded for levels of success. The teams then navigated their way to the next task by bike.

We raise about £2000 for Jersey Hospice.

I am keen to do something similar again, perhaps linking with Run Jersey (the run trial and geo-caching people) and use John's excellent Activity Centre at St Martin. This is an excellent location, with fields, hills, and close proximity to the beach.

Bootcamp and Outdoors Adventure

Bootcamp and Outdoors Adventure

My two key objectives for 2011 are taking part in the Etape du Tour (a stage of the Tour de France) on 11 July and the Round the Rock Ultra Marathon on 6 August.

Not sure what I will do after that, but I might consider setting up an Bootcamp and Outdoors Adventure session, making use of John Fox's new Adventure Training Facility in St Martin.

I would be interested in feedback, suggestions, ideas etc., if anyone is keen to take part. Otherwise my options will be to continue the high-volume training and think about Ironman either this Autumn (in the Southern Hemisphere) or next year.

An alternative would be to go back to power/strength training and return to rowing.

Happy to be persuaded according to other people's interests.
